You may want to reinstall Minecraft for a number of purposes. When you look through the Applications of Programs and Features folder on your PC to uninstall the game, however, you will not see Minecraft listed anywhere. You cannot uninstall the game in the usual methods since Minecraft is installed using a series of Java commands.
Additionally, when reinstalling the game, you will need to keep the save files safe to ensure that you do not lose any progress. This guide will help you learn how to reinstall Minecraft.
How to Reinstall Minecraft – Different Methods
Reinstall Minecraft in Windows
Step 1 – Don’t Delete Launcher
The executable or EXE file used to launch Minecraft does not need to be deleted. Many users think that the launcher is the file that contains all the data of Minecraft and that deleting it is necessary. None of the files or settings are actually stored in the launcher file. Deleting it only makes the reinstallation process all the more tricky, since you will have to download it once more from the website.
Step 2 – Open Minecraft Folder in AppData
Open Windows Run by clicking on the Windows Logo and R at the same time. A small window will open. Type in ‘%appdata%’. The AppData folder will now open on your screen. Open the Roaming folder on this window. You will see a folder that is named ‘.minecraft’. Double click on this folder to open it.
Step 3 – Copy the Save Files
Inside the folder, there will be another folder named ‘saves’. Copy this and store it in a safe location that you can easily access. You can use this save file to restore your worlds after reinstalling the game. Otherwise, all the data regarding your world will be lost forever, and you will have to start from the beginning.
Step 4 – Delete the Minecraft Folder
Navigate back to the Roaming folder in AppData. This time, right-click on the ‘.minecraft’ folder and delete it. Minecraft will now be uninstalled from your PC.
Step 5 – Use the Minecraft Launcher
If you don’t have the Minecraft launcher for any reason, you can download it from www.minecraft.net. You will be asked to log in before you can download the file.
Step 6 – Reinstall the Game
When you run the launcher, Minecraft will get installed on your PC once more.
Step 7 – Load Save files
Once Minecraft has been fully installed and loads on the screen, close it. Copy the save file that you had stored previously into the Minecraft folder inside AppData. Confirm that you would like to overwrite all the files that are present here. The saved worlds have now been restored to the reinstalled Minecraft game.
Step 8 – Launch the Game
You can now run the game as usual.
