Minecraft’s survival mode makes combat inevitable. Weapons such as swords and bows may be used to fend back enemies. Using a shield to defend against enemies, however, is overlooked in the game, although it can make a massive difference.
This guide will help you understand how to make a shield in Minecraft and use it.
What are Shields in Minecraft
Shields are defensive items and are a type of armor that you can make. It protects you from attacks by hostile enemies and can be used in conjunction with another weapon. Just like the player, shields also rack up damage when they block attacks from enemies, and eventually need to be repaired to be effective.
Required Items and Materials to Make a Shield in Minecraft
You will need the following items to craft a shield in Minecraft.
- 6 pieces of any type of wood plank – Oak, Dark Oak, Birch, Acacia, Spruce, or Jungle
- 1 Iron Ingot
How to Make a Shield in Minecraft
Once you have procured all the required materials, making a shield is quite simple.
You will need a crafting table. Open the crafting table so that a 3×3 grid appears on the screen.
You must place the required materials from the inventory into this grid. You will be using 1 iron ingot and 6 wood planks of the same type. Please note that all the 6 wood planks must be of the same type.
The materials must be placed in a specific pattern to make a shield. Put the iron ingot in the second or middle column of the topmost row of the grid. Then you must place two planks on either side of the iron ingot in the topmost row. The 3 boxes of the second or middle row must be filled with wood planks. Finally, the last wood plank must be placed in the second or middle column of the bottommost row. You can make a shield only if the materials are arranged in the exact pattern as described. The crafted shield will appear on the box to the right of the 3×3 grid.
Move the shield from the crafting table to your inventory. You can now equip and use this shield in the game.
Decorate and Use a Shield in Minecraft
Just crafting a shield and having it in your inventory is not enough to protect you from the attacks of enemies. It must be equipped to be effective.
Equipping a Shield
If equipped in the Main Hand, the shield will be used whenever the right mouse button is clicked. Shields equipped in the Off Hand, however, depend on what is present in the Main Hand.
A player cannot use a shield if food, a bow, or a potion is present in the Main Hand.A player can use a shield if an ax or sword is equipped in the Main Hand. If a placeable hook or a torch is present in the Main Hand and cannot be placed with a right-click it may be possible to use a shield.
Effects of Using a Shield
The player takes no damage from arrows and other projectiles.Flame or punch effects on arrows are significantly hindered.Hand-to-hand and melee attacks will deal 66% less damage.Player movement slows down to speeds similar to that of sneaking
Attacks that Shields Cannot Block
Bows with the Piercing enchantment will be able to damage you through a shield. Dragon’s breath and Splash potions will go through the shield.TNT damage cannot be blocked by shields.Vindicators can render your shield unusable for 5 seconds once they hit you.
Shields, just like swords and other weapons, have a certain amount of durability. Whilst protecting you from damage dealt by enemies, the durability of the shield drops. After accumulating a significant amount of damage, it will require repairs.
When crafting a shield, it first appears plain. Although cosmetic changes can be made to it to look nicer, the durability and block damage will remain the same. Customized shields can be created by combining a banner with a shield in a crafting grid. Banners with any type of pattern can be used, although owing to the comparatively smaller size of the shield, the entire banner pattern may not be seen. Note that using a banner to make customizable shields will consume it, and cannot be retrieved later.
