Dispensers are incredibly useful items in Minecraft and act as an automated weapon. They can be set up to damage mobs and enemies when a hook, lever, or pressure plate is triggered.
This guide will teach you how to make a Dispenser in Minecraft.
Required Items to Make a Dispenser
In addition to a Crafting Table, you require the following items to craft a Dispenser.
- 7 Cobblestone
- 1 Bow (must be undamaged, see also How to Repair a Bow)
- 1 Redstone Dust
How to Make a Dispenser Step-by-Step
Step 1 – Gather Ingredients
Redstone is a fairly rare item in Minecraft and can be found at depths of 16 blocks or more beneath the ground level. You require an Iron Pickax to mine Redstone Ore. Cobblestone is easily available in Minecraft and can be obtained by mining Stone. A Wooden Pickax is enough to mine Cobblestone. Finally, you need a Bow. If you do not already have a Bow, you can craft it using Wood and Strings. Approach any tree and use your hands or an ax to chop one block of Wood. Next up is finding 3 Strings. Kill 3 spiders to obtain 3 pieces of String from them. Killing spiders during the daytime is recommended since they are more hostile at night.

Step 2 – Crafting a Dispenser
Now that you have all the necessary items, it is time to craft the Dispenser. Open the Crafting Menu of the Crafting Table to see the 3×3 grid. You must place the items in a specific pattern in this grid to craft a Dispenser. In the top row, place 1 Cobblestone in each slot. In the middle row, place a Cobblestone in the first and third slots, and a Bow in the second slot. Finally, in the bottom row, place a Cobbsletone in the first and third slots, and Redstone in the second one.
Step 3 – Move to Inventory
A gray box containing a hole will appear on the right side of the Crafting Menu. This is the Dispenser. Move it to your inventory so that you can use it.
How to Make a Dispenser in Minecraft Video Guide
A Dispenser can be filled with arrows and connected to a tripwire system. Whenever a mob or player activates this tripwire, an arrow will be shot from the Dispenser, and deal damage.
Placing the Dispenser
Hiding the Dispenser is ideal to surprise enemies and mobs when they move into your territory. Dig a hole into a wall that is at least a couple of blocks deep. Place the Dispenser in your Hotbar, and then select it. Point towards the hole and place it inside. The Dispenser will be 1 block deep into the wall and be hidden.
To activate the Dispenser, we require a Redstone device. Tripwire hooks, pressure plates, buttons, and levers can be used. A tripwire hook works best. Place one hook on the wall, below the Dispenser. Place the other hook on the opposite wall.
For the tripwire set up to work, we require 3 Strings to be connected to the two hooks. Select the String present in the Hotbar, and place it on the block above the one containing the tripwire hook. Repeat the same with the hook on the other side. Finally, use the third String to complete the tripwire set up. You will observe that the hooks and wire get activated, and lay across the floor.
The final step is to connect the tripwire set up and the Dispenser with Redstone so that the Dispenser is triggered appropriately. You must place Redstone on any of the blocks between the hook and the Dispenser. You can now place the Redstone in the empty block in front of the Dispenser.
Fill with Arrows
The Dispenser needs to be filled with Arrows from your inventory to shoot them and hurt enemies. Select the Dispenser to open its inventory. There are 9 slots. Here, you can place items that will be used when the Dispenser gets activated. A maximum of 64 Arrows can be put in each of the 9 slots, although only one Arrow is shot out at a time.
Test it Out
Walk across the tripwire to set off the Dispenser and have it shoot an Arrow at you. A clicking sound is heard when you trigger the tripwire. If you are very quick, the Arrow will miss you and slam into the wall.
Tips and Tricks
- Dispensers can be used against mobs. This helps you avoid using the Bow and wasting its durability.
- The noise emitted by a Dispenser can be heard up to 16 blocks away and is quite distinct. If you hear it, exercise extra caution while moving around.
