Step 1: Look for strings, sticks, and iron ingots

Strings are generally found in chests located in desert temples, pillager outposts, dungeons, and woodland mansions. There’s also a good chance that you will come across a string while fishing or bartering with Piglins. If you want to use your crafting table, a single cobweb is all you will need to craft a piece of string. Sticks can be crafted using any two planks of wood or bamboo. Simply place the first plank in the center of the 3×3 crafting grid and the second plank directly below it in the second square of the third row. Drag and drop the crafted sticks into your inventory. Iron ingots can be crafted by combining 9 iron nuggets in your crafting grid. If you have access to a furnace, you can also choose to smelt iron ore to obtain iron ingots.

Step 2: Obtain a tripwire hook

Tripwires are specialized blocks that can detect if an entity passes through it. Naturally generated tripwire hooks can only be found in jungle temples. Chests in pillager outposts may sometimes contain this item. Crafting this item is the most efficient way of obtaining it. Select your crafting table to open the crafting menu. Leave the first and third columns empty. Place a stick in the center square of the grid, an iron ingot above the stick (second square of the first row), and any wooden plank below the stick (second square of the third row). You should now have a fully crafted tripwire hook.

Step 3: Craft a crossbow

In order to successfully craft a crossbow, you will need to place each of the items in a very particular order in the crafting grid. Begin by adding the tripwire hook to the center square of the grid. Place strings on both sides of the tripwire hook (first and third squares of the second row). Drop an iron ingot in the second square of the first row, directly above the tripwire hook. Fill the remaining first and third squares of the first row with sticks. Finally, place a single stick in the second square of the third row, below the tripwire. Drag and drop the crafted crossbow into your inventory to complete the process.

Alternatively, crossbows can be looted from chests inside pillager outposts and bastion remnants. Pillagers and Piglins also have a small chance of dropping a crossbow when killed.

Usage Tips

Although they are similar to bows, crossbows pack a much harder punch. This extra damage, range, and accuracy are gained at the cost of loading time. It takes about 1.25 seconds to load a crossbow, during which the player moves at a much slower pace. The player’s movement will return to normal immediately after the crossbow is fully loaded. Unlike normal bows, crossbows can also launch firework rockets. You need to have at least one arrow or firework in your inventory for your crossbow to be usable. Ammunition that is placed in the off-hand or in the Hotbar is prioritized over other ammunition in the inventory.

Crossbows can also be enchanted with to enhance their durability and damage in fights. The weapon excels in combat that involves targets like creepers, which are dangerous if they get too close. Owing to its incredible range, crossbows can also be used to shoot down targets that are fleeing from you. Keep in mind, however, that it is not a good idea to use a crossbow if your opponent has a shield. Shields completely negate the damage done by projectiles fired from a crossbow. In close quarters, the crossbow completely loses its usefulness due to its long draw time. If crossbows are damaged, they can be repaired using a grindstone or a crafting table. Combining two crossbows in the crafting menu will cause their durability scores to add up.
