The compass is a great way to keep track of where you are headed in Minecraft’s enormous game world. This comprehensive guide will help you better understand how to make a compass in Minecraft.
What is a Compass in Minecraft
Unless the server you are playing on is in adventure mode, all new players will always spawn in a tiny area around a particular spawn point. A compass will always point to the World Spawn, which is the center of this 21×21 area.
What Materials You Need to Craft a Compass in Minecraft
You will need the following materials:
- 4 iron ingots
- 1 redstone
How to Make a Compass in Minecraft
Step 1 – Acquire Iron Ingots
Iron ingots are some of the most widely spread loot items in the game. You can find these ingots in chests located in dungeons, mineshafts, desert temples, strongholds, villages, and even Nether fortresses. If you are intent on crafting an ingot by yourself, there are several ways to achieve it. You can place a single block of iron in the center of the crafting grid to obtain ingots. You can also make an ingot by filling the entire 3×3 crafting grid with nine iron nuggets. Alternatively, if you have access to a furnace, you can smelt iron ore to obtain an ingot. This is the most popular way of creating iron ingots. Click on the freshly generated iron ingot in the crafting menu and move it into your inventory.
Step 2 – Look for redstone ore
In order to acquire redstone, you might have to look underground. You will at least need an iron pickaxe to mine the ore. You will then have to smelt the redstone ore to obtain usable redstone.
Step 3 – Find a crafting table or build one on your own
You can find a crafting table quite easily in witch huts, igloo basements, or small village homes. If you want to make your own crafting table, simply place any four blocks of wood (the type does not matter) in the crafting grid. Drag the newly generated crafting table and place it in your inventory. You are now ready to begin making your compass.
Step 4 – Craft the compass
Select your crafting table and open the 3×3 crafting grid. Place the redstone in the center of the grid. Now, place one iron ingot in the second square of the first row. Drop two iron ingots in the first and third squares of the second row, on either side of the redstone. Place the final iron ingot directly below the redstone, on the second column of the third row. If you followed these instructions correctly, your ingredients will be in a ’ formation. The fully crafted compass will appear to the right of the 3×3 grid. Pick it up with your cursor and move it into your inventory. You can now start using the compass in the game! Compasses can also be found in map chests, library chests, and cartographer’s chests across the Minecraft world.
Using the Compass
The needle of your compass will point to the location at which you spawned. What makes the compass fascinating is the fact that it will always point to the world spawn point even when it is not in your inventory. If you simply find a dropped compass on the ground, it will still be functional. In fact, you do not even have to fully craft a compass to use it. If you simply place four iron ingots and a redstone in the formation described above, the icon on the right will show you the direction even before you pull it into your inventory. This is a very useful property of the compass since you can conserve your base ingredients.
A compass is more useful when it is combined with 8 sheets of paper to craft a map. Although paper is enough to craft a map, adding a compass to the mix will create an extraordinarily helpful location marker. This map will constantly get updated as you explore the world. It is crucial to remember that your compass will not work as expected in dimensions other than the Overworld. If you were to take the device into a dimension like the Nether, it will spin out of control and point to an entirely random direction.
