Soaring through the air and soaking in the wonderful sights of the Minecraft universe can be an exhilarating experience.
There are two ways to achieve this, one of which involves going into creative mode. Unfortunately, the default survival mode in Minecraft offers only a single way to fly.
This guide will help you get a clearer picture of how to fly in Minecraft.

A Step-by-Step Guide on How to Fly in Minecraft
The ‘Elytra’ is an elusive item that allows you to glide through the air. Obtaining this item, however, is no easy task. In fact, you will have to defeat the Ender Dragon in the final zone of the game (The End dimension). Heading into the final dimension without adequate preparation can be a disastrous undertaking.
Step 1: Make Preparations to Face the Ender Dragon
The Ender Dragon is a powerful and relentless foe that can be extraordinarily difficult to bring down without proper equipment. Before you travel to the End, mine as much diamond ore as possible. Since this can take an excruciatingly long time, you can also try exploring mineshafts, bastion remnants, buried treasures, and desert temples in search of diamonds. Crafting diamond armor and diamond melee weapons can go a long way in improving your chances of success in the final boss battle. Stock up on food, water, and other essential supplies that can sustain you while you travel to this strange dimension in Minecraft.
Step 2: Build a Nether Portal and Travel to the End
A nether portal can be built using obsidian blocks and the Eyes of Ender. Obsidian can be created by combining lava and water. Once you have successfully built your portal, enter the nether. Once inside, you will need to find a nether fortress, gather nether wart, and craft a brewing stand. Once you have stocked up on several Eyes of Ender, search for a stronghold in the Overworld. You will have to find the End Portal located inside the stronghold and fortify the area. Activate the portal by filling all its twelve empty cavities with Eyes of Ender. Ensure that the portal is fully activated before you leap into it.
Step 3: Slay the Ender Dragon
Saving, exiting, or reloading is not a good idea once you have entered the End. Performing any of these actions will cause a second dragon to spawn, making your task exponentially harder. You will face several dangerous ‘Endermen’ and the flying Ender Dragon while you are trapped in this dimension. Keep destroying all the visible Ender Crystals to stop the dragon from regenerating its health. A crossbow can be a very handy tool in this scenario since the crystals tend to explode and damage the player when destroyed. The Ender Dragon will not take any damage from lava, fire, or splash potions. You will have to rely exclusively on swords, bows, explosives, and other weapons to defeat the dragon.
Step 4: Travel to an End City
Once you have defeated the Ender Dragon, two portals will pop up in the End. If you walk through the portal with the dragon egg, you will be taken back to the Overworld. You will find another portal floating in the air at the edge of the small island. The portal will be too small to walk through. You will need to fling an Ender Pearl through the portal to activate the gateway. This will cause you to appear in an entirely new part of the End. Search for clusters of tall towers as you walk through this island. These clusters represent End Cities. Each of these cities has a small chance of containing an End Ship. Defeating the treasure guardian on one of these ships will give you access to the item frame behind the treasure chest. Break the frame and pick up the Elytra that falls from it. Equipping the Elytra will now allow you to glide through the air in survival mode.
Alternate Ways to Fly in Minecraft
Obtaining the Elytra can be a long and tedious process. If you want to enjoy the experience of flying high above the Overworld in Minecraft without any hassles, you can use cheats in ‘Creative Mode’. Start the LAN world with cheats enabled. In this mode, you can fly by quickly tapping the ‘jump’ button twice. Holding down the ‘sneak’ button will allow you to gently descend to the ground.
