Considered to be amongst the most useful animals in Minecraft, horses are a passive mob that can potentially serve as a great means of transport when tamed. Finding the right horses, taming them, and eventually proceeding to breed them can prove to be a tricky affair. This guide will help you learn how to breed horses in Minecraft.
Horses – Info and Variants
Horses can generally be found either in the plains biome or the savanna biome. In most cases, you will not find more than 6 of these creatures in a single herd. Although the markings on their skin may not be the same, every horse in a herd will generally be uniformly colored. Only one-fifth of all the naturally generated horses will spawn as baby-horses. With 5 different types of skin patterns (paint, snowflake appaloosa, sooty, stockings and blaze, and plain) and 7 base colors, there are 35 different variants that you will find throughout the Minecraft world.
Required Items to Breed Horses in Minecraft
- 2 apples
- 16 gold ingots
- 1 crafting table
- Optional: 40 apples to simplify the taming process
Taming the Horse
Step 1 – Collect apples
The breeding procedure requires two horses. It’s generally a good idea to collect at least 20 apples for each horse to make the taming process easy. You could also attempt to tame a horse without using apples by repeatedly mounting it until it stops bucking you off. This is not recommended, as it can take an excruciatingly long time.
Step 2 – Locate your horse and begin feeding it
Horses are quite abundant in plains and savannas. Once you have located your specimen, select the apples in your inventory and right-click on the horse. Continue feeding it until it begins neighing and bucking. You will also notice that it stops making crunching sounds once it is satisfied.
Step 3 – Mount the horse
Put away any equipped item and approach the horse with an empty hand. Right-clicking on the animal will cause you to mount it.
Step 4 – Look for the red hearts
While you are riding it around, you will start to notice several red hearts around the horse. This indicates that the animal has been tamed successfully. You can now safely dismount by hitting the left shift key. If the horse bucks you off before the hearts appear, you may need to mount it multiple times before it behaves.
Step 5 – Repeat steps 1 through 4 for another horse
Build a fence (at least two blocks tall) around the horse that you previously tamed. You can go out and look for another horse and follow all the steps again to tame it. Bring the second horse to the same enclosure that you made for your first one.
How to Breed Horses in Minecraft
Step 1 – Collect the resources required to craft a golden apple
There are two primary ingredients that you will need – apples and gold ingots. You can get your apples from chests located in igloos, strongholds, and villages. Apples can sometimes be found on oak trees as well. You can either craft a gold ingot from a single block of gold or nine gold nuggets placed in the crafting grid. Obtaining a gold ingot by smelting gold ore with any fuel is also a viable option.
Step 2 – Find or make a crafting table
If you do not have a crafting table yet, you can easily make one using four blocks of wood. Open the crafting menu and place any four blocks of wood in the four squares. Drag the crafting table into your inventory. These tables can also be found in igloos and witch huts.
Step 3 – Craft golden apples
Open the crafting grid by selecting your crafting table. Place the apple in the center of the grid and fill all the other empty spaces with gold ingots. This will create a golden apple. Drag it into your inventory and repeat the process for your second golden apple.
Step 4 – Feed the horses and wait for the baby horse
Ensure that the two horses in your enclosure are at full health. If they are not, you can get them to full health by feeding them red apples. Finally, select the golden apples in your inventory, and right-click once on each horse. After a couple of seconds, you will be able to see a baby horse in the same enclosure.
Taking Care of Baby Horses
It is important to note that horses must reach adulthood before you can start using them as a means of transport. If you want your baby horse to mature quickly, you can feed it wheat, sugar, apples, and carrots. If you manage to feed the baby horse 5 golden apples or 24 golden carrots, it will instantly morph into an adult horse!
